E-commerce fulfillment: frequently asked questions

What is a 3PL?

A third-party logistics provider (3PL) stores your inventory and ships your orders on your behalf. A fulfillment 3PL typically receives your goods, holds them in a warehouse, picks and packs each order, and hands it to a carrier, with software that pulls orders from your store or marketplace automatically.

What is the difference between an e-commerce fulfillment 3PL and an FBA prep center?

A fulfillment 3PL ships orders to your end customers. An FBA prep center prepares inventory for Amazon: receiving, inspecting, labeling, poly-bagging or bundling to Amazon's requirements, then forwarding it into a fulfillment center. Many providers do both, but the workflows, pricing, and deadlines are different, so compare them separately.

How much does e-commerce fulfillment cost?

Fulfillment is usually priced as a mix of receiving, storage per pallet or bin per month, a pick-and-pack fee per order and per additional item, packaging materials, and the shipping label itself. Ask each provider to quote your real order profile rather than a headline per-order rate, and use the warehouse cost calculator and FBA prep estimator on this site to model the pieces before you talk to anyone.

How do I choose between fulfillment providers?

Compare the things that decide the fit rather than the marketing: locations relative to your customers, integrations with your store and marketplaces, order cut-off times, receiving turnaround, minimums, whether they handle your product's storage requirements, and how returns are processed. Ask for a written quote against your own volumes and SKU count.

Should I use one 3PL or several?

One provider is simpler to manage and usually cheaper per order at low volume. Splitting inventory across two or more locations cuts transit time and shipping zones once your volume justifies it. A common path is a single location until shipping costs and delivery promises start to hurt, then a second location on the opposite coast.

How do I get listed in this directory?

Every provider listing is free to claim, which lets you correct details and add your capabilities, facility information, certifications, and photos. Enhanced and Featured listings are available if you want more room and better placement.
